Chapter 5

Augmented and Virtual Reality products

Virtual Reality:

  • immersive multimedia or computer-simulated reality, replicates an environment that simulates a physical presence in places in the real world or an imagined world, allowing the user to interact in that world.

To get a feel for Virtual Reality we are playing in two areas:

  • Google Cardboard- The cost is approximately $5 per set and the app is free for download on iTunes

    • Eventually I would like to get a 360 camera and have students create their own VR for their Google Cardboard googles

  • SecondLife – We do both in-class and online assignments in SecondLife.Mostly I give simple directions, such as, going to the Introduction Island and fly around and visit different destinations. This gives students some first-hand knowledge of what it is like inside a VR world.

Augmented Reality:

(AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

This is one of my student’s favorite assignments.  They are required to create a short video and make a still jpg photo for the trigger.  They put these pictures on their websites with directions on how to download the Aurasma applications and make their pictures come to life.

Free mobile app available for download from the App Store or Google Play. Also, the augmented reality (AR) platform which can power other third party apps.

Create a trigger picture, add an overlay(video) and use a mobile phone to see the picture come to life

Directions for both Aurasma and Secondlife are included on this page.
