Chapter 9

Social Media, SEO and Analytics
  • Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people or companies to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks.

  • Social media is defined as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content”

  • Web 2.0 describes World Wide Web sites that emphasize user-generated content, usability, and interoperability.

  • In the U.S. alone, 65 percent of adults use social networking sites, according to Pew Research Center, and among millennials age 18-29, that figure hits 90 percent.

New and Re-invented Players of 2016:

  • Periscope– scooped up by Twitter in a reported $100 million acquisition -- allows users to share videos of events in real-time. Viewers can save the video to replay later, and add hearts if they like a video or comment on it

  • Peach- a new app for iOS that has been created by the co-founder of Vine. It combines lots of our favorite elements from familiar apps into one single app. It's a combination of Facebook, Path, Slack, Snapchat and Tumblr all rolled into one.

  • Wanelo- social shopping app, which is derived from the phrase Want, Need Love, features millions of products from the likes of big brands all the way through to independent Etsy sellers.

  • Bebo-was a social channel a lot like MySpace, and everyone was on it. It quickly lost traction, though, due to the huge success of Facebook and Twitter. Bebo has been completely relaunched as a social app. You create your own avatar, and you can chat with friends using funny illustrations that are generated from your hashtags. It's free to download.

  • Shots- A rival to the likes of Snapchat, Shots is a smartphone app that lets you capture photographs or videos, or 'shots' as they're called in this app, through the front-facing camera(Selfies), which then get shared with other Shots users. The Shots are VHS-style with a time stamp included, which adds a fun retro touch.

  • Blab-is a video chat app that allows group interactions with up to four people that anyone can watch in real-time. Users can create their own talk shows, conduct interviews and debates or simply hang out with a group of friends. Viewers can post comments or ask questions.

  • Slack found a niche in the market by focusing on business users fed up with sorting through a glut of email. It offers a more streamlined messaging app interface for communicating with groups of colleagues. It can also be used for conferences and is loaded with features like an automatic archive of all conversations.

  • Mobile messaging apps including WhatsApp, Viber and Line for free alternatives- WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS.

New Players that might be a bit more dangerous:

  • Yik Yak is a social media smartphone application. It is available for iOS and Android and it allows people pseudo-anonymously to create and view discussion threads within a 5-mile radius. It is intended for sharing primarily with those in proximity to the user, potentially making it more intimate and relevant for people reading the posts.

  • Kik Messenger- Kik is known for its features preserving users' anonymity, such as allowing users to register without providing a telephone number, and preventing users from being located on the service (including by the company itself) through any information other than their chosen username

  • Hyper is a new photo-sharing app that uses hastags and geotags to help likeminded people in the same area discover new things It's designed to let people remain anonymous if they want to, sharing secrets and confessions with people from around the world.

Important and Why:

  • Linkedin- for business/professional networking.  Make sure your Linkedin account is up, solid and getting hits. This is the network where prospects, future employers, potential partners and investors will find you. Add blog posts to show expertise and add interaction and analytics

  • Facebook- light business and friendship, but it is checked by employers. A platform to socially interact and connect. It's about your face - and your public persona.

  • Twitter may well be allowing longer posts now, but no-one wants to be bothered with a second click. A concise informative 140 characters that ignites a conversation is what the platform was designed for and yields way better results.
